FAQ

Questions about GrowCal

Short answers about coverage, calendars, data and accuracy.

Is GrowCal free?
Yes. Creating and downloading a planting calendar is free, and there are no accounts or payments in the current version.
Does it work anywhere in Australia?
Location search covers Australian suburbs, localities and 4-digit postcodes nationwide, and every location resolves to a curated regional growing profile so you always get a calendar.
Why does GrowCal ask for my suburb or postcode?
It's the simplest way to work out roughly when things should happen in your garden. Your suburb or postcode is used to match you to a regional growing profile — you never need to enter a street address.
What is a growing region?
A curated regional growing profile: a short description of how a part of Australia actually gardens across the year, plus the schedule rules your calendar inherits. You can browse them all on the growing regions page.
Can two suburbs with the same postcode have different results?
They can. Some postcodes cover several localities that sit in different regions, so search lists each suburb separately with its state. Pick the one you actually garden in.
Does GrowCal work with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook?
Yes. Your calendar downloads as a standard .ics file, which all three support. Open or import the file and the reminders appear as all-day events.
Does downloading the calendar create a live subscription?
No. It's a one-time download and import. If you change your plants or move, generate a fresh calendar and import it again.
Can I choose only the plants I grow?
Yes. Filter by category, then tick or untick individual plants. Only the plants you keep selected appear in your calendar and in the .ics file.
How accurate are the planting dates?
They're general guidance for your region, not precise instructions. Plant schedules are currently a preview dataset still being validated, and they haven't been reviewed by a professional horticulturist.
What about frost pockets, balconies and microclimates?
A regional profile can't see your particular site. If you garden in a frost pocket, a hot courtyard, a shaded balcony or a windy coastal spot, treat the reminders as a prompt and adjust by a few weeks either way.
Why is some data marked preview or in validation?
Because we'd rather be honest about it. Regional descriptions are human-written and reviewed; plant schedules are seeded and still being checked. We only mark data verified once citable sources are attached.
Can I suggest a plant or a correction?
Please do. Email hello@growcal.com.au — include your suburb and postcode if it's about regional timing.
